This picture brought to mind the tales from the Knights of the Round Table. Taking a new twist in today’s age, Guinevere is no longer a pawn but a true Queen in this legend’s complicated game of chess.

What Goes Around
Smoke lingered in the air, the embers still warm. Gwen wrapped her cloak tighter in the chill, furtively gathering her tools as she made to leave. Stubborn tears clung to her lashes, but emotions now were of no use to anyone.
Glancing back to the clearing, she knew she’d done what she must. Art’s body was now ash and Lance awaited at the station with their tickets to freedom. She yearned for him, their love a beacon of hope in a twisted world.
Fingers of dread slowly released, her heart soaring, each footstep taking her toward a future filled with hope.

Nice twist on a old classic!
Ouch.. love the twist.. and the sinister way in which she takes control over her own life.
The station? A modern Arthurian legend, I presume? Hmmm . . . interesting twist.
All my best,
MG
I like this modern twist to King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Now Gwen and Lance are off to live happily ever after. 😀
Dear Erin,
Kept waiting for Morgan Le Fey to appear. Perhaps he is the train’s conductor. Well done.
Aloha,
Doug
Dear Erin,
Art’s body ashes? 😯 Lance and Gwen done him in? Now there’s an interesting twist. Nicely done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Nice take on an old favorite. I love anything King Arthur and medieval times. I went back even further with my story. I hope you’ll check it out. http://bit.ly/1xih9cg
Some lovely language here. Hope it works out for them.
A great concept Erin. You have my imagination racing with yours!
I wonder how often they have to relive this again. Freedom through murder? Great story.
This is so compelling. It’s one of my favorites. I love the photo, too. Really interesting.
What a great twist on an old tale. Nicely done.
A fascinating twist on the legend. I love that Gwen took control over her own life – though I hope she gets caught for murdering Art. 🙂
Like everyone’s been saying, great twist! Good job!
A much more hopeful (and murderous!) story than the original. Nicely told.
Circle 9, the circle of treachery–defined in Inferno as fraudulent acts between individuals who share special bonds of love and trust… Maybe not such a happy ending after all?
Still, Gwen is a far more sympathetic protagonist than Lance is.
Poor Art, chopped and burned to ashes? Talk about heartburn . . .
Yep. I had to do it.
Good job of re-telling an old tale, Erin.

Thanks, Janet. It made me revisit the story to remind myself of all the twists.
Nice retelling. Poor old Art – what a sad ending for him.
Yes, sad to have to destroy Art like that. 😀
Nice modernisation of a classic Erin. I hope Art turning to ash is an innocent passing away, other this takes on a more sinister turn!
Thank you for reading!
Dear Erin, Good story and I enjoyed the part of Art in the ashes. Good job! Nan 🙂
Thanks, Nan!
We see quite a different Gwen from the traditional victim. Well told, Erin. 🙂 — Suzanne
Yes, that was my hope! Thanks for reading.
hunk of burning love?
