So many angles, so little time. Here’s one I’m sure others may try…..
Word Count: 98
Once a Goat
– I miss you
– You miss me taking care of you
– No, really – I know I did you wrong, but baby, you were always it for me
– Now’s a great time to tell me all this. Once a goat, always a goat. That’s what my mama taught me.
– I should have been true to you. I know I deserved it.
– I should have done worse.
– But, honey, now that you’re gone – do you think you’d consider changing me back?
– I don’t reckon I will. No, sir. I don’t reckon I will.

Wait, is this the updated version of the Changeling?
I haven’t read that one – maybe it is!
Come on change him back. Who knows maybe he will do better on his second try. Fun story!
She may change him back. Give it time…..
Convincing dialogue… very convincing.
Thanks, Sandra. Your comment did end up in Spam. I’m glad I went looking!
Goats, frogs… . Don’t be cruel. Highly readable little gem.
Perhaps….thanks for reading!
Dear Erin,
On the other hand he might get used to life as a goat. I mean she could’ve changed him into a gnat, so he should be grateful. Nice one.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Exactly! It could have been MUCH worse.
This is a sweet break from the dark side, really on a lighter side. I enjoyed the story
Thank you for reading!
I’m not sensing a lot of forgiveness on her part, and I’m afraid he’s worried about being invited to a barbeque–as the guest of honor.
I ha’t thought of that! Maybe in the next chapter!
Them’s the breaks and tough consequences — the character says it so well with “Once a goat, always a goat”!
It’s hard to change one’s nature…maybe she’ll changes her mind with time… Or not.
Dear Erin,
Loved this story. Condemned to graze the grass round the witches grave that turned him into the embodiment of what he was. This is like Ouroboros, the mythical snake eating its tail. Reminds me to be nicer to my witch.
Aloha,
Doug
When you put it like that, Doug, I think you might want to watch your back! Thanks for reading – great to see you back.
I agree! 😉
Fantastic tale told in dialogue, craftily written to spin out the sting at the end.
She’s going to stay angry for a while…he may have to get used to those horns and hooves.
Terrific!
Loved it.
Thanks, Elephant. I assume you aren’t trapped as an elephant from some heinous deed in your past….
Being AnElephant is actually a reward and a promotion for having been a near perfect human in a former life!
Ah…that explains it!
No sir. I don’t reckon I will.
Perfect. Make a decision and stick to it. Sort of a Marie Laveau type.
Thanks, Honie. She is still mad. I think he’s going to be a goat for a while.
She will relent, I’m sure. She is after all, a woman. 🙂
I think she plans to take her time…after all, she has plenty of it now!
🙂
I don’t really feel he’s sincere. I vote she leaves him that way. For some reason, your post reminded me of one of my favorite Pink Martini songs, “Now I’m Back”:

Love it! I just returned from walking with my dog in the park and Pink Martini is performing there next month. They are a lot of fun.
