Waking up on the futon, she wasn’t sure if the light meant early morning or late evening. After 24 hours of travel, her internal clock was completely turned around. Taking in the new surroundings, she was struck by sameness of some things, the newness of others. Even the air smelled unfamiliar, a sure sign she was far from home.
Regardless of the time of day, her bladder insisted she get up and find the toilet. From the kitchen below, she heard Mihoko singing. It was morning after all. She knew this would be a trip of a lifetime. Japan beckoned.
