In Flight
She was soaring on wings as light as gossamer, gliding through the warm air currents, feeling them brush along her body as gentle as a child’s sigh in sleep. Flying, she was free, with only the blue sky above her and the sinuous green river below beckoning like a song. Come down to drink your fill, play with us here on the shore. Darting downward, she landed gently, without really touching. At rest now on the rock, she was at peace. Opening her eyes, she felt the glow of freedom still.
Sometimes her chemo dreams were really good.
This one is for my sister, Jan. The photo prompt is courtesy of Madison Woods. Her story can be found here, along with links to all the other Flash Friday Fictioneers.

Beautiful — I was skipping along with the damsel fly. Then, so poignant with your last line, which intensified your stories beauty.

…as gentle as a child’s sigh in sleep… beckoning like a song… the glow of freedom…

The last line jolted me out of my flight with the damselfly. Well done. Mine is here and linked as well: http://readinpleasure.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/fridayfictioneers-the-omen/
Nicely done.
Hi Erin,
I think the dream of flying was an excellent premise and I used to have dreams like this so I can really relate to your story. Your writing is very elegant and elevated (no pun intended). By the way, what’s a weeble? Is that a Brit thing?
My story is here: http://bridgesareforburning.wordpress.com/
This is wonderful, you really manage to capture a sense of peace and lightness and I must say the reality of it was just full of warmths and I am so glad you shared this.

What a lovely tribute to your sister. I know a little about those chemo dreams….
This is so lovely, captures the essence of this photo very well. And a fine tribute to your sister. Thanks for stopping by mine 🙂
A beautiful story with a gentleness in nature. One can only wish for such dreams, for all suffering with cancer or terminal illness.
Beautiful, magical. poetic descriptions. Thank you for taking me on this delightful ride. And a lovely tribute to your sister. I’m on the list…and here:

oh my god. this was just amazing
Simply beautiful, Erin. The last line knocked it out of the ballpark.

Wow! I was following the damselfly in a happy world full of light, then, wham! jolted back into a painful reality. Very well-done. But I wish that it had been less so. My story’s on the list.
Lovely, poetic description – and I did NOT see that last sentence coming! Well written.
This is beautiful Erin. Light and airy like the damselfly’s flight. Very well told.
And for your readers here’s mine

how dare you. you give me that lovely thought, and then you take it all away like that. of course i’m being facetious. well done. best one i’ve read yet. not because of the descriptions or word choices but because of the emotional stab – in a good way.
This is so beautiful and lyrical, but you give it real power with the final line. The combination is incredible – well done. I hope the dreamer manages to hold onto that sensation after she wakes.
The language is beautiful and the images powerful.
Lovely lifting of the reader right into your dream-like state. Almost like that first awakening when you know it’s a dream, and if you try really hard you can get back into it. Thanks!

Dreams of flight & freedom are common, but never get old. Nice take on a classic theme. I can imagine they take on a much deeper meaning while you’re going through chemo. Nice job!
very nice 🙂
Dear Erin,
I’m with Rich, this is the best one of a swarm of good ones. Rich, lyrical, poetic and, in the end, a gateway to an entire new story. You’ve woven a web of magic for Jan. Good on you.
Aloha,
Doug
(thanks for stopping by my kaleidoscope.)
Wow, that was a complete surprise at the end and what a complete contrast to the main story – it was the perfect ending 🙂 Thanks for dropping by mine too : http://womanontheedgeofreality.com/2012/06/22/friday-fictioneers-gramps-and-me/
What a loving tribute to your sister and I hope she really does have such a glow of peace during her chemo dreams. I liked the gossamer wings reference and the gentle way she came down to earth again.
I’m loving this! 🙂 SHort and complete!
Bravo. A nice place to visit during difficult times.
